Where each one wins
Scrivener is the better buy if you want to pay once and never think about it again. It has three decades of compiling and manuscript-export depth that nothing here matches, and no subscription. What it does not have is AI, an Android build, or Korean spell check.
Ulysses is the nicest place to write if you live entirely on Apple hardware and want a calm, markdown-first editor. If you use Windows or Android at any point in your day, it is not an option — those versions do not exist.
Novelcrafter and Sudowrite are further along on pure AI drafting than we are, and if generating prose is the main thing you want, try them. Both run in the browser only, and their costs work differently: Novelcrafter asks you to bring your own provider key on top of the subscription, and Sudowrite meters usage as credits.
pensiv is the pick when the manuscript is long enough that keeping it consistent is the hard part — a plotboard, character and worldbuilding sheets, and AI review that reads the whole project instead of the page in front of it.
